Back in the Roman period, individuals who were suffering from toothache gained their patron saint. Her name was St. Apollonia. The story goes, that she stood up for her faith and because of that was threatened to be burned alive. The threats turned into actions; and while she was encompassed by the fire, she called out that whoever invokes her name while suffering from a toothache, would be healed.

The methods of curing the illness may have changed but the emphasis has not. Dental care to this day remains an important aspect of our hygiene and health. Maybe it is the fact that they rest inside our mouths, or that we use them whenever we eat or talk, or because they make our smile beautiful; whatever the cause may be, teeth remain an important part of our lives.

Maintaining good dental health is important for many reasons. One is that it adds aesthetic value to our faces. It makes our smile glow beyond the original happiness and adds to the general pleasance of our face. This, in turn, affects our confidence. Many people suffer a blow to their self-esteem due to bad-looking teeth. Conversely, well-kept teeth can make you talk with more confidence.

Also, as almost all food has to go through the processing of the teeth, they play an important role in nutrition. Tooth decay, gum infection, and inflammation can cause us to let go of many of the nutritious foods. Many fruits cannot be ingested and similarly, many vegetables are checked off from the to-eat list!

To avoid such issues, dental experts have provided us with many easy-to-carry-out bits of advice. One is to take in fluoridated water and use fluoride toothpaste while brushing the teeth. It is also recommended to brush twice a day and to floss daily so that plaque does not develop in the mouth. In addition, visiting the dentist for a check-up of your teeth is mandatory at least once a year. This protocol must be followed even by people who do not have all-natural teeth. Visiting the doctor must also be conducted when one feels a sudden change in taste. Furthermore, sugary products, alcoholic beverages, and tobacco-based products must be avoided. If one smokes, he should leave it! Also, if due to a certain condition or medication, your mouth runs dry excessively, then take special care of that. Either switch your medication or start taking in a lot of water or start chewing sugarless gum.

The above are a few pieces of advice that can help us increase the well-being of our teeth. The most important aspect of any health care is consistency. One must be consistent with his methods of care. Therefore, the gist of dental care is to sustain a good condition of the teeth. Take all precautions and be vigilant for all threats to your dental health. Do not allow yourself to become the sufferer of toothache;  become a person who never needs to invoke the name of St. Apollonia!
